Description:

1954 AJS Model 20

The 1954 AJS Model 20 sits right at the heart of British motorcycling's greatest era. Associated Motor Cycles (AMC) was producing some of the finest iron in the world out of their Plumstead factory, and the Model 20 was their reliable, torquey 500cc single that served commuters, clubmen, and touring riders across Britain and the Commonwealth throughout the 1950s. The fact that this one made it all the way to Australia from the UK with original sales documentation and repair records is a story in itself.

This example presents as an older restoration that has covered just 2 miles since the rebuild was completed, and the photos back that up. The gloss black finish on the frame, fenders, and primary chaincase is clean and presentable. The chrome tank panels retain their lustre, and the exhaust system from header pipe to silencer is one of the bright spots of the restoration, looking genuinely excellent. The AJS-cast primary chaincase, the AJS enamel badges on the toolbox and battery box, and the correct Smiths Chronometric speedometer in the classic nacelle all add up to a motorcycle that looks the part from across the room.

The engine number is stamped clearly: 54/20 18332, confirming the 1954 model year and Model 20 designation without any ambiguity. The Lucas K2F magneto is present and the engine turns over with compression, which is a very encouraging sign for a non-runner. The carburettor is in place and appears complete. The frame is straight, the front end is true, and the cooling fins are fully intact with no breaks or chips.

A realistic buyer needs to know: this is a project, not a rider. The dynamo shows significant corrosion and will need attention or replacement. The warning light jewels are missing from the nacelle. The speedometer has been rebuilt to zero. These are all known quantities that a competent restorer can address. The hard part, which is sourcing a solid, numbers-matching AJS Model 20 with UK documentation and a straight, crack-free frame, is already done for you.

This is the right starting point for a serious British classic restoration or a sympathetic recommissioning. Original UK sales documentation and repair records are included, which is rare and genuinely valuable provenance.
