Description:

1966 Gilera Super 202

Gilera is a name that deserves a lot more respect than it gets in Australia. Before Gilera sold their racing program and technology to MV Agusta in 1957, they were winning Grand Prix World Championships. Those famous rainbow championship stripes on this Super 202 tank are a direct nod to that heritage, and they still look tremendous after 60 years.

This 1966 Gilera Super 202 is a rare find at any auction. The 200cc air-cooled four-stroke single is a compact, dependable unit typical of mid-1960s Italian engineering at its practical best. The whole bike has that purposeful elegance of period European lightweights, a style that has aged extremely well. The VDO speedometer shows 3,643 miles, and the overall presentation is consistent with a low-mileage machine that has been stored rather than thrashed.

The positives are real. The bike is complete and largely original. Frame number 201/661 and engine number 201/661 match, both clearly stamped and unaltered. The chrome front fender is still bright. The tank stripes and Super 202 script badge are intact and distinctive. The vendor reports it runs well with a new battery, and the electrics are functioning. There is a Dolomiti Touring Club badge on the rear, suggesting this bike has some Italian club history behind it.

Be honest with yourself about the work it needs though. The seat cover is in poor shape, with extensive tearing, cracking, and tape repairs throughout. It needs a full reupholster before this bike looks the part. The tank white paint has chipped at the edges with some bare metal and light surface rust visible near the rear. Both tyres are aged and should be replaced before any road use regardless of tread depth. The headlight shell has minor surface rust around the key slot.

None of that is terminal. This is a sympathetic preservation or partial restoration project, not a turnkey classic. For a collector of vintage Italian lightweights, a matching-numbers Gilera Super 202 at open auction is a rare opportunity. These machines rarely surface, and originality like this is worth protecting.
