Description:

1970 Ford M151A2 Mutt - Olive Drab - 4,358 Miles - 141.5ci 4-Cylinder, 4-Speed Manual, 4WD - Ford Motor Company Build, Data Plate Present

A Vietnam War era US military quarter-ton utility vehicle built by Ford Motor Company under a 1968 US Army contract and delivered in December 1970.

Description

The M151 MUTT (Military Utility Tactical Truck) was the standard light utility vehicle of the US military from the 1960s through to the 1980s, serving in Vietnam and beyond. The M151A2 was the final and most developed variant, incorporating rear suspension improvements and updated safety features over the original M151 and the interim M151A1. This example was built by Ford Motor Company, confirmed by the data plate which reads Contract No. DAAE 06-68-C-0001 and Date of Delivery December 1970. That combination of Ford manufacture and documented delivery date places this example squarely in the Vietnam-era production run that collectors seek most keenly.

The vehicle presents in its original olive drab finish with the compact, purposeful silhouette the M151 is known for. The body is intact, the front and rear tow hooks are in place, the folding windscreen operates correctly, and the military-specification blackout tail lights with flip shutters remain present and intact. The 141.5 cubic inch (2.32-litre) inline four-cylinder engine is in the bay in original configuration. The four-speed manual transmission and transfer case are present with both shift levers in place. Cooper Discoverer Cross Country tyres are fitted to black steel military rims all around, with a matching spare tyre mounted on the rear carrier. A 5-gallon military fuel can is strapped to the rear carrier. The entrenching tool is mounted to the left side panel. The instrument cluster is intact and includes speedometer, fuel level, oil pressure, coolant temperature, and voltmeter gauges. The odometer reads approximately 4,358 miles. Canvas seating is present at all positions, with the driver seat showing deterioration consistent with age and use, and the rear passenger seat in better condition. The vehicle is listed with no key.

For the military vehicle collector, the combination of Ford manufacture, legible and complete data plate, correct serial number, and full suite of period accessories makes this a notably well-documented example. M151A2 Mutts in original specification and with provenance documentation at this level are increasingly difficult to source.
