1970 Ford Mustang Mach 1 Fastback
The Mustang Mach 1 was introduced in 1969 as Ford’s performance-focused answer to the growing muscle car wars. By 1970, it had cemented its place as a legend, pairing aggressive styling with big-block power to dominate both the street and the track. Today, the Mach 1 remains one of the most sought-after first-generation Mustangs, beloved by enthusiasts worldwide.
This example underwent a comprehensive, rotisserie restoration in 2016 by a Melbourne classic muscle car specialist. The bare shell was stripped to metal, sealed in epoxy primer and finished in Dupont Jet Black, with a full right-hand drive conversion including firewall, wiper system, and collapsible ididit steering column. Every system was rebuilt or replaced, with upgrades applied throughout for performance, safety, and reliability.
Power comes from a 408ci (6.7L) stroker V8 fitted with high-quality components including Fast multi-point electronic fuel injection, digital ignition, Edelbrock RPM intake, Comp hydraulic roller cam with lifters, Hooker ceramic-coated extractors and a race aluminium radiator with thermo fans. The engine is paired with a fully rebuilt Ford AOD 4-speed automatic overdrive transmission with high-stall converter, supported by a new fuel system and wiring harness.
Underneath, it features a Ford 9-inch LSD with 29-spline axles and 3.9 gears, new balanced tail shaft, upgraded front coilover suspension, 4-link rear setup, rack-and-pinion power steering and disc brakes all around with new booster and lines. A twin 2.5-inch Magnaflow exhaust adds the right soundtrack.
The interior has been restored to Mach 1 deluxe specifications with custom upgrades including B&M shifter, carbon fibre console inserts, leather trim, cobra wood steering wheel, autometer instrument cluster, and integrated roll bar. Modern comforts include Dynamat insulation, RAB air conditioning, electric windows, Bluetooth, GPS, reversing camera and ICE push-to-start ignition.
The Mach 1 became a cultural symbol of American muscle, immortalised in film, television and even video games as one of the ultimate expressions of Mustang performance. Its mix of street presence and racing pedigree helped Ford capture the imagination of a generation, and today the Mach 1 Fastback is regarded as one of the most desirable pony cars ever built.
