1988 HSV VL SS Group A Walkinshaw Build #624 Verified Matching Numbers

Few cars capture the raw spirit of Australian touring car racing like the HSV VL SS Group A Walkinshaw. Born out of Holden’s determination to dominate on the track, this road-going homologation special was as wild on the street as it was effective at Bathurst. Its dramatic body kit earned it the nickname “Plastic Fantastic”, but beneath the aggressive styling lay serious engineering that made it one of the most formidable machines of its era.

Build #624 of just 750 produced, this Walkinshaw is finished in the unmistakable Panorama Silver and represents HSV’s first true hero car. Under the bonnet sits the legendary 5.0L fuel-injected V8, matched to a 5-speed manual gearbox, producing around 180kW. With its unique twin-throttle body intake manifold and race-bred aerodynamics, the Walkinshaw was designed with one purpose: to give Holden the competitive edge it needed at Bathurst.

This particular example is a matching-numbers car and comes complete with its original owner’s manual. It has had just three owners from new, with the last enthusiast treasuring it for 25 years. Its careful custodianship and originality make it a standout example of one of the most significant Holdens ever built.

HSV Walkinshaw History

The VL SS Group A Walkinshaw was launched in 1988 as the first car built by Tom Walkinshaw’s newly formed HSV. It was a bold departure from anything Holden had offered before. Its outrageous aero kit wasn’t just for show, it was honed in wind tunnels to reduce drag and increase downforce for racing. On the road, it delivered performance figures that placed it among the fastest Australian cars of the decade.

Produced in a limited run of just 750 cars, each individually numbered, the Walkinshaw quickly achieved cult status. It signaled a new era for Holden performance, cementing HSV as a brand synonymous with power, exclusivity, and motorsport pedigree. Today, surviving examples remain highly sought after by collectors worldwide, prized for both their rarity and their role in shaping Holden’s performance legacy.
