THE QUEEN’S REGIMENT – OFFICER’S HELMET PLATE (POST-1966 FORMATION)This Is An Officer’S Helmet Plate Of The Queen’S (Royal West Surrey Regiment) — A Fine Late-Victorian To Early-Edwardian Example.Crown (Top) The Crown Is The Victorian Crown (Often Referred To As The Queen Victoria Crown Or Imperial Crown), Distinguished By Its Tall, Arched Profile With A Prominent Monde And Cross At The Top. This Confirms That The Plate Dates From The Reign Of Queen Victoria (1837–1901), Prior To The Changeover To The King’S Crown In 1902.Central Device – The Griffin The Central Motif Depicts A Silver-Plated Griffin Passant (Walking, One Foreleg Raised), On A Red Velvet Ground. The Griffin Is The Ancient Heraldic Symbol Of The Queen’S (Royal West Surrey Regiment), Derived From The Arms Of The Duchy Of Brunswick And Associated With Queen Catherine Of Braganza, Wife Of Charles Ii — The Regiment’S Early Royal Patron. The Plumes & Garter Motto Surrounding The Griffin Is The Garter Of The Order Of The Garter With The Motto: “Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense” (“Shame Be To Him Who Thinks Evil Of It”). This Feature Was Standard For Line Infantry Regiments Granted Royal Status.Wreath And Star The Plate Consists Of An Eight-Pointed Gilt And Silver Star, Overlaid With A Laurel Wreath, Both Crisply Struck. This Format Was Introduced Under The 1881 Childers Reforms, When Regiments Adopted Unified Helmet Plate Patterns.Scroll Inscription At The Bottom, The Silver Scroll Bears The Regiment’S Title: “The Queen’S” — Denoting The Queen’S (Royal West Surrey Regiment). Earlier Plates (Pre-1881) Bore “2Nd (Queen’S Royal) Regt Of Foot.”Origins: The Regiment Traces Its Lineage To 1661, When It Was Raised In Tangier As The 2Nd Regiment Of Foot To Serve King Charles Ii. It Earned The Title “Queen’S” In Honour Of Catherine Of Braganza And Maintained A Long And Distinguished Record Of Service Throughout The Empire.Victorian Era (Main Period Of This Plate): The Regiment Served In:The Napoleonic Wars (Notably In The Peninsula And Waterloo Campaigns)The Crimean War (1854–56)The Second Afghan War (1878–80)The Boer War (1899–1902)Uniform Context: This Gilt And Silver Officer’S Helmet Plate Was Worn On The Home Service Helmet, Introduced In 1878 And Used Until 1901 (When The Edwardian Crown Replaced The Victorian Type). The Deep Red Velvet Centre Indicates Officer’S Quality, As Other Ranks’ Versions Were Die-Struck Without Velvet Inlay.Later History: In 1959, The Regiment Merged With The East Surrey Regiment To Form The Queen’S Royal Surrey Regiment, Which Later Evolved Into Today’S Princess Of Wales’S Royal Regiment (Queen’S And Royal Hampshires).
