Description

The 1952 Mercury Monterey sits in the sweet spot of early 1950s American design, right when Detroit was moving away from the rounded pre-war shapes into the longer, lower, wider look that would define the decade. Mercury positioned the Monterey as its premium line that year, and this sedan carries the full complement of Monterey-specific trim: chrome script badges on the front fenders, rear quarters, and dashboard, the distinctive chrome and red vertical-bar accent pieces on the fenders, the Mercury crest hood ornament, and the correct period hubcaps. Under the bonnet sits the Mercury 255ci flathead V8, the larger displacement cousin of the famous Ford flathead, paired with the Merc-O-Matic automatic transmission with its column-mounted selector.

Photos confirm the two-tone paint presents with very good to excellent gloss and depth across all panels. The body is straight with consistent panel gaps and no visible dents or obvious evidence of accident repair. Chrome bumpers, grille, headlight bezels, window surrounds, and the distinctive side trim spears are all present and in bright, presentable condition. One area of body has been stripped to bare metal to expose the body stamping for verification purposes. The interior has been reupholstered in a period-appropriate two-tone teal and cream vinyl with pleated inserts, and it presents in excellent condition. The Forest Green painted dashboard retains the original push-button AM radio, analog clock, and full gauge cluster, with the Merc-O-Matic selector clearly visible on the column. Carpets appear fresh, the headliner is tight and clean, and door cards on all four doors match. Aftermarket lap seatbelts have been fitted. The flathead V8 engine bay presents as complete and largely original in appearance with honest driver-quality patina and minor surface grime consistent with age. The factory data plate on the door jamb is legible, reading serial number 52ME48291M.

The 1952 Mercury Monterey has a dedicated following, particularly among lead sled and custom car enthusiasts who prize the body shape. Classic.com data puts the average sale price for first-generation Montereys around US$27,000, with well-presented examples in correct colour combinations achieving above that. This sedan, with its striking Primrose Yellow and Forest Green combination, correct Monterey trim, well-executed interior retrim, and complete chrome package, presents as genuine value for a buyer looking for a stylish 1950s American cruiser.
