Description:

1972 BMW R75/5

The BMW R75/5 is the bike that put German touring motorcycles on the map. When BMW launched the /5 series in 1969, they essentially redrew the rulebook for what a civilised long-distance machine could be, and the R75/5 sat at the top of the lineup, pushing out 50 horsepower from a smooth 750cc boxer twin that would happily devour continental distances without complaint.

This 1972 example presents very well in its two-tone livery. The iconic long-style toaster tank wears its original black and silver panels with the BMW roundels looking crisp on each side, matched by blue metallic fenders with white pinstriping. The chrome louvered side covers are present and correct, the mufflers are the proper cigar-style units with expected golden heat patina, and the wire-spoke wheels are straight and true with good tyre tread all round.

The vendor advises it starts, runs and rides well, with a new battery recently fitted. Shaft drive means no chain to deal with, and the 4-speed gearbox is smooth as you expect from a BMW. The engine looks dry in the photos with no obvious leaks, both Bing carburetors are in place, and the finned cylinder heads and barrels show honest age without any damaged fins. One non-original bright yellow component is visible behind the side covers on both sides, likely an aftermarket ignition component, worth a closer look on inspection.

Matching engine and frame numbers are confirmed by the photos, and the bike comes with its original tool tray, toolkit, and tyre pump, which is a lovely touch for collector presentation. A small period-style auxiliary gauge is also fitted to the handlebar clamp area.

Important note for bidders: the listed odometer figure of 17,403 miles should be verified against the instrument at inspection. The instrument cluster photo indicates a reading that may differ from the stated figure, and buyers should confirm the actual reading before bidding.

This is a knowledgeable collector or enthusiast rider's machine, someone who appreciates what the /5 represents in BMW Motorrad history. Buy it, sort the minor points, and enjoy one of the finest touring classics of the 1970s.
