Description:

1958 Matchless G9

The 1958 Matchless G9 represents classic British parallel-twin motorcycling at its most refined and elegant. Built by Associated Motor Cycles in London and sharing its DNA with the AJS Model 20, the G9 offered a smooth, torquey 500cc twin that was equally at home on a weekend run or a long-distance tour. AMC built these bikes to last, with a robust separate gearbox, dependable electrics for the era, and that unmistakable combination of chrome tank panels, deep black paintwork, and Matchless winged badges that makes every example a standout in a crowd.

This particular machine is a seriously impressive example. Imported from the United Kingdom last year with import approval in hand, it presents in outstanding condition across the board. The black paint is deep and glossy with no visible chips or fading. The chrome tank panels are near mirror quality and the red pinstriping is clean and even. Both chrome exhaust headers and silencers are bright and reflective, unusually good for a 67-year-old motorcycle. The Amal carburettor, Smiths instrument, and original period-correct controls all look exactly as they should.

Engine number 58/G9/51563 is clearly and cleanly stamped on the crankcase, fully matching the documentation. The vendor reports the bike starts, runs well, and has been test ridden. The Smiths Chronometric speedometer shows 271 miles (buyers should verify in person), which combined with the excellent visual presentation suggests this machine has had very careful stewardship throughout its life.

Note: small amber turn signals are fitted at the rear and are likely a later addition rather than original 1958 factory equipment. Easy enough to remove if the buyer prefers the fully original look.

The G9 was never built in huge numbers and well-preserved UK-sourced examples with documentation are increasingly sought after as British twin collectors recognise the quality and elegance of the AMC range. This is a strong buy for a rider who wants an honest British classic that turns heads, or a collector after a high-quality display piece with real provenance.

Sold unregistered. UK import approval included.
