Description / Overview:
The W116 established the S-Class name and set the template that every luxury saloon since has chased. Built from 1972 to 1980, they were overengineered by design and have aged accordingly. This 280S is an April 1975 build, delivered new to Brisbane through Aust-Star Motors at 773 Ann Street in the Valley, and the original dealer sticker is still on the firewall. That kind of continuous local history matters for a 50-year-old car.
The exterior is exceptional. Celadon Green Metallic is a proper period colour and the paint is consistent, glossy, and free of rust across all panels. Chrome on the bumpers, grille, window surrounds, and body trim is outstanding for a car of this age. Inside is where this one really stands out. The tan MB-Tex is remarkably well-preserved throughout. Front and rear seats, all four door cards, and the headliner are all original and intact. The dashboard is uncracked. The trunk is clean with the original warning triangle and first aid kit in place. For a 50-year-old daily car this interior is extraordinary.
The engine bay needs attention before driving. There is a blue tape repair on an intake hose that must be replaced with a proper hose. Hood insulation has deteriorated and needs replacement. Air conditioning requires regassing or service. A small dent has been disclosed in the front passenger door. These are not deal-breakers but they need to be addressed.
