Description
The Honda S600 Coupe is one of the rarest Japanese production cars of the 1960s. Honda produced the S600 in both open roadster and fastback coupe body styles, and the coupe numbers were tiny, with worldwide production estimates sitting somewhere between 1,100 and 1,500 units total. Finding one in Australia in running, presentable condition is a genuine event. This is that car.
The 606cc DOHC inline-four is present and appears correct, running four Keihin carburettors and wearing the original chrome Honda cam cover in excellent cosmetic condition. Engine bay has been resprayed and presents cleanly. The speedometer is in mph with Denso Japan gauges throughout, confirming export or Australian-specification delivery. Interior has the original black vinyl bucket seats, the factory Honda radio delete plate with Honda script badge, and all original Denso gauges intact. The original Honda wood-rimmed three-spoke steering wheel is present, though the wood finish is heavily worn and dry and will need refinishing or replacement. The body is straight with good panel gaps and a previous respray in red that presents well. Chrome bumpers and trim are solid with the expected age patina on finer detail items.
Odometer reads 49,276 miles on a 5-digit unit, so the true total mileage history needs vendor clarification as it cannot be confirmed from the odometer reading alone. Budget Zetum tyres are fitted. The rear hatch gas strut appears to be a modern replacement unit rather than the original.
Two things buyers must verify in person before bidding. First, the chassis plate photographed in the engine bay reads BODY NO. AS285C-1001217, while the listing records AS285C-1001277. These differ at the last two digits of the serial number. This discrepancy needs to be physically checked and confirmed on site. Second, no Australian compliance plate was identified in any of the 64 photos provided. Import and registration documentation must be confirmed with the vendor before bidding. Neither of these points is a reason to walk away from what is a genuinely rare car. They are reasons to inspect carefully, ask the right questions, and satisfy yourself on the paperwork before putting your hand up.
