Description

Production date: 06/09/1977. That is the date stamped on the first A9X Torana to come off the Holden line. Not the first of this colour. Not the first of this specification. The very first A9X SLR5000 sedan Holden ever built. PSN number one. Of the 500 sedans and hatches combined, this car wears the lowest Production Serial Number of them all. You will not find a more historically significant Torana in Australia. Full stop.

To understand why this matters, you need to remember what the A9X was born into. Ford's 1977 Bathurst 1-2 with Allan Moffat leading Colin Bond across the line had left Holden scrambling. The A9X performance option kit was rushed into production as the response, and this was the car that kicked it all off. Tagged as a Holden press vehicle, it was photographed and road tested for the motoring magazines in 1978 wearing NSW registration IYL 155. That same plate is with the car today. First registered 11 October 1977 at Penfold Holden in Burwood, Victoria, the paper trail from 1981 through to present day ownership is fully documented and travels with the car in a dedicated folder. This is not a car someone is claiming might be the first A9X. This is the car, with the evidence to prove it.

The car presents in exceptional condition. Exterior specification is complete and correct. The full black bonnet treatment, white body, four-corner bolt-on flared guards, front chin spoiler, rear ducktail spoiler, A9X bonnet bulge, and SLR5000 badging on the guards are all present and correct. At 58,901 km, the odometer tells a story of careful custodianship across 48 years of Australian summer. The paint quality is beyond what original 1977 lacquer would present, and any buyer should verify the respray history with a paint depth gauge. A high-quality correct respray does not diminish value on a car of this provenance, but it needs to be confirmed. The wheels currently fitted are mesh style rather than the factory A9X slot mags. Buyers should establish whether the original wheels are retained and whether they are included in the sale. On a car at this level, matching original items matter.

The listing does not include engine bay or underbody photographs, and for a car of this claimed significance, buyers need to insist on those before bidding. The compliance plate, engine number HT424947, body number, and all firewall stampings need to be verified by a recognised A9X specialist. The chassis number CLX052168M should be cross-referenced against Holden production records and the Torana Owners Club of Australia registry. The Salisbury limited-slip differential and A9X-specific 308 V8 configuration should be confirmed as correct and matching. The documentation folder, original plate, and continuous ownership history are a compelling foundation. But for the kind of money a car like this commands, independent expert authentication before bidding is not optional.

If it checks out, this is the holy grail of A9X collecting. Not one of the early cars. Not a low-numbered car. The first one. The car Holden used to show the world what the A9X was. That is a position in Australian automotive history that cannot be replicated.
