Description

The 1928 Ford Model A holds a very particular place in motoring history. It was Ford's triumphant answer to the question of what comes after the Model T. Henry Ford shut down production for six months to retool, and when the Model A arrived it was genuinely modern for its time: a 40-horsepower inline-four, a proper three-speed sliding gear transmission, four-wheel mechanical brakes, and a range of body styles that covered everything from basic roadsters to formal town cars. Nearly 4.9 million Model A Fords were built between 1927 and 1931, and the roadster with rumble seat is one of the most evocative.

This example presents as an older completed restoration in two-tone beige and cream upper body over black lower body and fenders, separated by a hand-painted brown accent line. The wire spoke wheels are correct and properly painted black, fitted with whitewall tyres that suit the car perfectly. A Ford-branded spare tyre cover at the rear is a nice period touch. The black soft top is erected and appears serviceable. The brown pleated upholstery inside is visible and appears in keeping with the overall presentation. The folding windscreen frame, correct quail-style radiator cap ornament, period-correct bumpers, and proper cowl louvers all confirm this is a correct and authentic Model A Roadster body, not a replica or kit car. The rumble seat deck visible at the rear is correct for the standard roadster.

The paint is aged and showing its years, with some dulling, minor chips, and oxidation typical of a restoration now likely ten to twenty years old. This is absolutely a driver and a show-the-neighbours car, not a concours contender. The engine (original 3.3 litre 'A' engine, confirmed by the engine number format) is the unit that went in the car, though without the hood open for inspection a full assessment is not possible. The fact it comes with no key is worth noting but is very common for Model A's, as keys are generic and a locksmith or Model A club member will sort it out easily.

Model A Roadsters at this presentation level have been trading consistently in the $22,000-$38,000 AUD range at Australian auctions and in private sale, with well-documented examples and fresher restorations commanding the upper end. This car sits comfortably in that bracket. For a new owner, it will start and drive right now, draw a crowd at any Sunday morning car meeting, and connect them to motoring history in a way that few cars can match. If you have ever wanted a Model A, here is an accessible and honest one.
