1976 Volkswagen Kombi Split Window | 3-Door Van | 1.6L Petrol | 4-Speed Manual | Rear Wheel Drive | 81,886km | 8 Seats | Blue/White

Description

By 1976, German production of the iconic T1 split-window Kombi was a distant memory, having ended back in 1967. But Volkswagen do Brasil kept the dream alive, continuing to build the split-window design right through to 1975. This particular bus was built in Brazil and assembled by Volkswagen of South Africa at their Uitenhage plant, making it one of the last split-window Kombis ever produced. It is a genuine Freightline variant, a rare multi-window configuration that brings serious visual appeal with its rows of windows running the full length of the body. Right-hand drive and configured as a 9-seater, this is not your typical LHD Brazilian import.

The two-tone blue and white paint presents beautifully across all panels. The blue lower body carries deep gloss with excellent reflection, and the white upper section matches in quality. Panel alignment is consistent throughout, with even gaps on the barn doors, sliding door, and engine lid. No visible rust, dents, or paint bubbling anywhere on the body from the photos. Inside, the black vinyl seats with horizontal pleating are in good condition across all three rows, and the white headliner is clean with only minor age-appropriate wrinkling near the edges. The 1600cc air-cooled flat-four sits tidy in the rear, running a single-barrel carburettor with an aftermarket dry paper-element air filter. An aftermarket wood-rimmed steering wheel has been fitted, which suits the character of the bus nicely. The compliance plate confirms the Brazilian origin and South African assembly, with the chassis number matching the listing.

Brazilian-built split-window Kombis have become increasingly collectible as the last of the true T1 lineage. Comparable examples on Bring a Trailer have sold between US$28,000 and US$45,000 (roughly A$42,000 to A$67,000), depending on condition and window count. A 23-window-style 1975 example sold for US$33,251 (approx A$50,000) in November 2024. With its right-hand drive configuration, striking two-tone presentation, and genuine Freightline multi-window body, this Kombi ticks boxes that most Brazilian imports simply cannot.
