1972 Holden HQ Single Cab Utility, 454ci Big Block V8, StreetFighter Turbo 400 automatic, rear-wheel drive, 70,139 miles indicated, 2 seats, red.
Description
The HQ Holden utility has always been a popular starting point for Australian street machine builds, and this 1972 example has been transformed into a serious big-block performer. The factory drivetrain has been replaced with a 454 cubic inch V8, backed by a new StreetFighter Turbo 400 automatic transmission rated to 725 horsepower, a recently rebuilt Ford 9-inch differential, and a custom Hardy Spicer tailshaft. Under the bonnet the 454 is presented with a red-painted block, Edelbrock air cleaner, chrome valve covers with Holden script, blue silicone plug wires, and an aftermarket aluminium radiator. Twin hood bulges have been fitted to the bonnet to accommodate the big-block. This is a purpose-built Australian street ute with the drivetrain to match its looks.
The red paintwork presents with reasonable gloss and is described as a respray, with some variation in shade between panels noted from photos. The cab rides on matching multi-spoke black alloy wheels with 235/60R15 street radial tyres. The original HQ ute tray has been replaced with a custom steel checker-plate flatbed finished in dark black, with a timber headboard fitted behind the cab. Inside, aftermarket leather and suede bucket seats have been fitted, along with a SAAS sport steering wheel, B&M ratchet floor shifter for the Turbo 400, a pod-mounted Auto Meter performance tachometer with playback capability, and a triple auxiliary gauge cluster reading amps, oil pressure, and water temperature. A touchscreen head unit with wireless CarPlay has been installed, along with a toggle switch panel for dual electric cooling fans and electric fuel pump. A 12-volt air conditioning system has also been fitted. The chassis number stamp DHQ06936S is consistent with HQ Holden identification.
Vendor advises the vehicle is fitted with a 12-volt air conditioning system. This is a heavily modified, non-numbers-matching build aimed at a buyer who wants big-block performance in an iconic Australian body. Comparable modified HQ street utes with quality drivetrain work have traded in the $25,000 to $40,000 range, with the strength of the driveline upgrades being a key value driver. The combination of the StreetFighter Turbo 400, rebuilt 9-inch, and custom Hardy Spicer tailshaft represents a significant investment in drivetrain quality.
