Description

The Ford Model A holds a very particular place in motoring history. When Henry Ford shut down the River Rouge plant for six months in 1927 to retool after the legendary Model T, the car that emerged was a genuine leap forward. A proper 40-horsepower inline-four, a three-speed sliding gear transmission, four-wheel mechanical brakes, and a range of body styles that rivalled anything on the market. Nearly 4.9 million were built between 1927 and 1931, and the roadster with rumble seat remains one of the most evocative and sought-after body styles of the era.

This example presents as a completed older restoration in a handsome two-tone beige and cream upper body over black lower body and fenders, divided by a hand-painted brown accent line. The paint has honest patina from a restoration now likely ten to twenty years old, with some dulling and minor chipping, but the overall presentation is clean and correct. Panel alignment is good throughout. The black wire spoke wheels are correctly finished and fitted with whitewall tyres that suit the car perfectly. A Ford-branded spare tyre cover on the rear-mounted spare is a nice period touch. The black soft top is erected and serviceable, showing some age-related wrinkling. The interior features brown pleated bench upholstery in good condition with minimal cracking, matching door cards with embossed panels, dark carpeting, and a four-spoke steering wheel. The folding windscreen, correct quail-style radiator cap ornament, cowl louvers, and period-correct bumpers all confirm this is an authentic Model A Roadster body. The rumble seat opens to reveal matching brown upholstery with honest patina. A period-style accordion luggage rack with tool bag sits on the running board, adding to the charm.

The engine bay houses the original 3.3-litre inline-four with engine number CAW6990 confirmed on the block. The engine presents as complete with correct components including the original carburettor, exhaust manifold, and starter motor. Instruments include the original speedometer reading 81,915 miles, ammeter gauge, and ON/OFF ignition switch. The chassis number W55072 is stamped and visible on the frame.

Model A Roadsters at this driver-quality presentation level have been trading consistently between $22,000 and $38,000 AUD at Australian auctions and in private sale, with fresher restorations and fully documented examples commanding the upper end. This car is an honest, accessible entry into pre-war motoring with genuine character. It will draw a crowd at any Sunday morning car meeting and connect its new owner to motoring history in a way that very few cars can.
