Price Guide: $10,000 - $18,000

1971 Mazda 1800 (180069A) | four-door sedan | 13B rotary engine | 5-speed Celica gearbox | rear-wheel drive | cream

Description

The Mazda 1800, designated the 180069A in Australia, was part of Mazda's first generation of rotary-powered family sedans, a range that established the brand's reputation for innovation in the Australian market during the early 1970s. This particular 1971 example has been built into a well-engineered rotary street car using quality running gear throughout. The factory 1300cc rotary has been replaced by a 13B rotary engine with electronic ignition and a Bosch alternator, paired with a Toyota Celica five-speed gearbox and a Ford 8-inch differential conversion running a 4.11 ratio with a Tru-Trac limited-slip differential and 28-spline axles. That is a serious and well-thought-out drivetrain combination.

The cream body presents with honest, unrestored patina across all four doors and the long bonnet. The exterior panel lines are intact and the body is straight, with original chrome door handles and trim strips retained. Aftermarket multi-spoke alloy wheels replace the period-correct hubcaps, giving the car a cleaner modern look while retaining the classic proportions. The engine bay shows the 13B installation with an aftermarket pod air filter, updated alternator, modern battery, and additional wiring consistent with the performance upgrade. Inside, the original dark vinyl bench seats and period instrumentation are intact, with aftermarket Speedhut gauges fitted for engine monitoring and Mazda-branded floor mats. The window winder handle on the driver's door is noted as missing. The overall cabin is a genuine, original interior that has been preserved rather than restored.

Early Australian-delivered Mazda rotary sedans in any condition attract genuine collector interest, and a running, driving example with quality mechanical upgrades already completed is a rare find. The 13B, Celica five-speed and Ford 8-inch LSD combination is a proven recipe that makes this a usable, enjoyable classic rather than a trailer queen. Vendor advises an odometer reading of 710 kilometres, which is understood to reflect the current drivetrain build rather than total vehicle life.
