1999 Mazda MX-5 NB | 2-seat convertible | 1.8L 4-cylinder petrol | 5-speed manual | rear-wheel drive | 160,794km | blue metallic
Description
The NB-generation MX-5 (1998-2005) is the second chapter of the world's best-selling two-seater sports car, and it arrived with a meaningful step up over the original NA. The 1.8-litre four-cylinder brought more torque, the chassis got sharper, and the interior moved to a more modern layout, all without losing any of what made the original so compelling. These cars were built to be driven, and the NB remains one of the most accessible, rewarding rear-wheel-drive experiences available at any price. Parts availability is excellent, the community is strong, and values have been climbing steadily as enthusiasts recognise what they are.
This 1999 example presents in blue metallic with a black hard top fitted, giving it a cleaner roofline and improved weather sealing over the standard soft top alone. The paint carries reasonable gloss across all panels, consistent with a 25-year-old car that has been driven rather than stored. Minor stone chipping is visible on the bonnet leading edge and some light swirl marks and scuffing appear on the rear bumper, all well within normal parameters for the age and mileage. The NB pop-up headlight covers show yellowing typical of this generation, a common cosmetic item. Panel gaps are consistent and the body presents straight with no obvious signs of accident repair or panel misalignment. The aftermarket exhaust exits under the rear bumper on the driver's side. Inside, the two-seat cabin shows honest wear to the seat bolsters and steering wheel, reflecting the vehicle's active life. The dashboard is intact and the instrument cluster is legible. The boot is functional, with scissor jack and tool kit present.
Clean NB MX-5 examples in driveable condition are regularly fetching $6,000 to $9,000 through private sale and $5,000 to $7,500 at auction, depending on service history and mechanical state. The hard top is a desirable addition that adds genuine value and usability. At the guide range, this is a compelling entry point into genuine sports car ownership with rear-wheel drive, a proper manual gearbox, and one of the most enjoyable chassis ever built for the money.
