1964 DRB Sabre Magnum MK 1 - White with Blue Stripes - VW-Powered Australian Kit Car, Detachable Roof, 20,826km

Price Guide: $8,000 - $14,000

1964 DRB Sabre Magnum MK 1 | VW air-cooled flat-four (rear-mounted) | 4-speed manual | 20,826km | 2-seat convertible | Globe alloy wheels | Located Acacia Ridge, QLD

Description

The DRB Sabre is one of Australia's genuine curiosities, a fibreglass-bodied sports car built on VW Beetle mechanicals that offered exotic wedge-shaped styling at a fraction of what a European import would have cost. Built in limited numbers from the late 1970s through the 1980s, very few survive in running condition. The Magnum designation refers to the extended variant of the Sabre MK1, and this example is among the rarer survivors at auction.

The two-tone white and blue livery with flowing side stripe and accent lines gives this car a dramatic presence. Profile photos show a straight fibreglass body with no major cracks or structural damage visible, sitting low on Globe polished alloy wheels with modern tyres. The wedge-shaped nose with recessed rectangular headlights is intact and the overall stance is purposeful. The rear carries a dual quad-exit exhaust system, with the louvred rear valance confirming the rear-mounted VW air-cooled flat-four configuration. The convertible soft top and detachable hardtop provide weather protection options. Inside, beige upholstered bucket seats, a wood-rimmed three-spoke steering wheel with VW Wolfsburg crest boss, and three circular gauges in a black dashboard make for a characterful cockpit. A recently replaced Power Crank battery is fitted in the storage compartment behind the seats.

DRB Sabres in running, presentable condition have traded privately for $10,000 to $20,000 depending on condition, and the Magnum designation adds further rarity. Vendor advises scratching to side steps and marks on the interior of the roof. The soft top headliner shows staining and would benefit from replacement. For the collector who wants something genuinely different on the show field, the DRB Sabre is a conversation piece that represents a uniquely Australian chapter of sports car building, and this one is one of very few that actually survived.
