1972 Fiat 500 - Red - 84,387 Miles - Unrestored Original, Matching Numbers

1972 Fiat 500 (110F series), 500cc air-cooled 2-cylinder petrol, 4-speed manual, red, rear-wheel drive, 84,387 miles indicated, right-hand drive.

Description

The Fiat 500 is one of those genuinely iconic machines that needs no introduction. Built from 1957 through to 1975, it became a symbol of post-war Italian optimism and practical ingenuity, packing real personality into a package barely over three metres long. The 110F series, which this car belongs to, represents the most refined iteration of the original design, with the folding sunroof, rear-hinged "suicide" doors, and the characterful rear-mounted air-cooled twin all part of the package. This 1972 example sits in the final years of genuine 500 production, before the 126 took over.

This car presents as an honest, unrestored original rather than a concours restoration project. The red paint holds reasonable colour across the body with minor oxidation and fading on the bonnet leading edge. The driver's door shows paint damage to the centre panel with bare metal visible, and there is surface rust on the door frames and surrounding metalwork. Body panels are largely straight with no obvious major crash damage, and the suicide-door layout and chrome window surrounds remain intact. The folding sunroof is present. Original steel wheels with period-correct hub caps are fitted, and the narrow tyres appear aged but serviceable. Inside, the cabin carries its years honestly: the original Veglia Borletti instruments are present and correct, the two-spoke steering wheel is in place, and the floor-mounted shifter is where it should be. Aftermarket sheepskin seat covers are fitted over the original seats. The front suspension area shows age-related rust on the components, and a given the vehicle's age and storage history. A collection of spare parts is included, with old-stock belts and suspension components in the boot. Chassis number 2042937 is confirmed on both the plate and the body stamping, matching the listing documentation.

Collector interest in original, numbers-matching Fiat 500s has been building steadily, with clean examples in the $8,000 to $14,000 range in the current market. This car appeals to the buyer who values genuine provenance and originality over a freshly painted, rebuilt example. For the right enthusiast, an unrestored original with matching numbers is the preferred starting point, and the spare parts collection adds practical value. Guide of $8,000 to $14,000 reflects the work required while acknowledging the appeal of an authentic, matching example.
