1986 Honda Civic GL Hatchback - White - 154,686km - Unmodified Third-Gen Survivor
Price Guide: $4,500 - $6,500
1986 Honda Civic GL 3-door hatchback | 1.5L EW2 12-valve four-cylinder | 4-speed automatic | FWD | 154,686km | white
Description
The third-generation Civic, built from 1983 to 1987, was the machine that took Honda from promising upstart to genuine global force. Sharper styling than the rounded first and second-gen cars, a stiffer body, more sophisticated suspension, and an engine range that balanced real-world efficiency with enough willingness to make driving enjoyable. The GL variant sits in the sensible middle of the range, fitted with the 1.5-litre EW2 12-valve carbureted four-cylinder paired to a four-speed automatic. These cars were virtually bulletproof in everyday use, and genuine, unmodified survivors from this era are worth finding.
This white three-door presents in honest, unrestored condition. The build plate confirms manufacture date of March 1986 and chassis JHMAAH7320S207682, Australian-delivered and ADR-compliant. The EW2 1.5-litre 12-valve engine is present and correct, confirmed by the valve cover markings in the engine bay photos. The black body cladding strip runs the full length of the car and is intact. The GL badge is present on the tailgate. Interior presents well above average for the age and mileage, with the original dark blue and grey two-tone cloth upholstery holding up well in the rear, front seats in reasonable condition, and the dashboard largely crack-free. A Pioneer cassette head unit is fitted, a typical and period-correct aftermarket addition. The instrument cluster confirms 154,686km and illuminates evenly. The automatic gear selector gate shows the four-speed positions correctly. Body is straight overall and the panels are consistent. There is rust bubbling and body filler at one rear wheel arch, a known rust point on these cars, and is a known rust point on these cars. The rear hatch shows darker paint than the body in some photos, which may indicate prior repainting of that panel. Steel wheels have surface oxidation but are structurally sound, with replacement Toyo tyres fitted.
Third-generation Civics in original, unmodified condition are attracting collector interest from JDM enthusiasts who missed the boat on earlier models. Comparable white GL hatchbacks in Australia are currently listed between $5,500 and $9,000 for solid survivors with service history. At the guide of $4,500 to $6,500, this represents a realistic entry point for a period-correct original that is ready to use or restore. The 12-valve EW2 engine is one of the more robust units of the era and parts availability remains strong.
