Description
The Ford Capri Mk1 is one of those cars that gets better looking with every passing decade. Ford launched it in Australia in 1969 as a genuine affordable sports coupe, and the GT 3000 variant with the 3.0-litre Essex V6 was the performance flagship of the range. The combination of rear-wheel drive, the punchy V6, and the fastback roofline made it an enthusiast's car from the beginning, while the Super Roo Sports Pack added distinctive kangaroo decals, sports mirrors and a unique Australian identity. Surviving GT 3000 Super Roo examples are genuinely rare, particularly Australian-assembled cars from the final months of local production.
According to the vendor, this vehicle retains its original build plate, confirming it was assembled as a GT variant from a UK-supplied kit at Ford's Homebush Assembly Plant in November 1972, the final month of Australian Ford Capri production. The current owner has owned the vehicle since 2010. Prior to their ownership, the Capri was modified by a previous owner for use as a club track and hill climb car. During that period, the original damaged engine block was removed and replaced with a new 1977-manufactured Essex V6 crate engine block. The replacement block fitted to the vehicle today remains un-numbered and displays only the factory casting information "30 7 L 14", identifying it as a 3.0-litre Essex V6 block manufactured on 14 November 1977.
The current owner has since returned the Capri to historic road registration in South Australia, carrying out restoration work including the interior, wheels and exhaust system. The orange exterior with black bonnet detailing presents extremely well, complemented by Super Roo kangaroo decals, colour-coded racing mirrors and Minilite-style alloy wheels finished with red-painted barrels and fitted with near-new 185/60R13 tyres. Lucas long-range driving lights further enhance its period appearance. The engine bay is clean and well presented, featuring the replacement 3.0-litre Essex V6 fitted with a Holley carburettor, chrome air cleaner and aftermarket blue HT leads.
The restored interior is a standout feature, with refurbished seats, dashboard, gauge pods, carpets and door cards all presenting to a high standard. A period-correct AM/FM radio cassette player has been fitted, while the instrument lighting has been upgraded to LED. The sports centre console with electric clock and leather gearshift gaiter complete the cabin, with the odometer displaying 77,263 miles.
Included with the vehicle is an extensive spares package comprising boot seals, aluminium side mouldings, Weber carburettor mounting plate, oil filters, FORD bonnet and boot badges, workshop and repair manuals, headlight covers, two keys and assorted spare parts. The vendor also advises that purchasers intending to register the vehicle outside South Australia should check their local registration authority requirements, as the replacement engine block may require the vehicle's engine identification to be stamped before registration.
Capri GT 3000 Super Roo examples continue to attract strong interest from collectors thanks to their rarity, Australian assembly and distinctive styling. This example offers a well-presented and enjoyable classic that has been sympathetically restored for historic road use while remaining transparent about its period competition history and replacement engine.
