Overview
The Lotus Esprit is one of those rare cars that transcends its era entirely. Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, refined over two decades, and engineered to a philosophy that Colin Chapman made famous, the Esprit proves that light weight and clever engineering will always beat raw cubic inches. The S4 Turbo, produced from 1993 to 1998, was the culmination of that entire lineage, and this 1997 example is among the very best you will find anywhere in the country. It carries a factory 50th Anniversary badge, marking Lotus's half-century milestone, and with just 53,754 kilometres on the odometer it has barely been used. The original owner's wallet and keys are present, and the car retains its factory emission control and vacuum routing labels in the engine bay, confirming its identity as a genuine Esprit Turbo S4 with a 2.2-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing around 264 horsepower.
The exterior in gloss black is outstanding. Body panels sit straight and true with no evidence of accident repair or panel replacement. The Esprit S4 decal on the rear quarter is intact and clearly legible. Inside, the cream and black leather combination is period-correct for the S4 and presents well for the age and mileage. Both seats retain good shape and the leather has not cracked or dried out. The Lotus-badged three-spoke steering wheel shows honest patina on the rim but is structurally sound. The carbon-effect textured instrument panel houses a full VDO gauge suite covering temperature, oil pressure, tacho, fuel level and the 280km/h VDO speedometer, all clearly legible. Air conditioning and power windows are fitted. The centre console carries a Kenwood DVD head unit and retains the original rotary climate controls. A Boss subwoofer has been fitted in the cabin. The Lotus-branded door sill tread plates are present and in good condition.
