1918 Indian Powerplus - Maroon - Original Unrestored Condition - Genuine Pre-War Survivor

1918 Indian Powerplus 1000cc V-twin, manual transmission, rear wheel drive, maroon, original unrestored condition

Description

Indian Motorcycle Company was founded in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1901 and by 1918 was the largest motorcycle manufacturer in the world. The Powerplus engine, introduced in 1916, was a landmark design, a 1000cc side-valve V-twin that delivered smooth, reliable power and formed the backbone of Indian's range through this era. In 1918, Indian was heavily committed to the allied war effort, supplying thousands of motorcycles to military forces. A civilian-spec Powerplus from that year is a genuine survivor of one of the most significant periods in American motorcycle history.

This machine presents in original, unrestored condition with honest patina accumulated over more than a century. The maroon paint on the fuel tank retains much of its original character with age-appropriate wear. The distinctive Powerplus V-twin engine is all there, the finned cylinders, the crankcase, the magneto and carburettor all visible and consistent with factory specification. The frame number 83K056 is clearly stamped on the crankcase and matches the documentation. The original leather saddle remains structurally sound with natural age-related wear to the hide. Controls include the original handlebar with throttle and spark advance levers, period wooden-knobbed hand controls, and a petcock on the original fuel tank. Both spoked wheels are present and intact. The rear carrier rack remains fitted. The machine is disclosed as not running and missing some parts.

Pre-war Indian motorcycles with verifiable matching numbers and original construction are increasingly scarce on the open market. Comparable unrestored Powerplus-era Indians have sold in the $18,000 to $28,000 AUD range at specialist auctions, with restored examples pushing considerably higher. For the serious collector or museum, this machine offers an authentic and unmodified example of early 20th century American motorcycle engineering that rewards careful, knowledgeable restoration.
